49ers GM John Lynch addresses future amid departure rumors

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch has insisted he’s going nowhere this offseason. 

“I just had somebody come in and say, ‘Hey, man, is there something I should know?'” Lynch told The Athletic’s Tim Kawakami. “I said, ‘What do you mean?’ He said, ‘I’m getting all these calls that, you know, people are inferring that you’re leaving.’ I was, like, ‘No, I’m good.'”

Lynch spoke with Kawakami after it was learned that 49ers assistant general manager Adam Peters declined general manager interviews with the Tennessee Titans and Arizona Cardinals. That news understandably caused some to believe Peters thought there may soon be an opening in San Francisco. 

“He’s been big for me,” Lynch added about Peters. “At the same time, I’m a friend. I said, ‘Pete, maybe you should at least talk to these people.’ But he was convicted that he was good here. And his family’s happy. So I like that, and I think, yes, we have a place where people want to be.” 

As David Bonilla mentioned for 49ers WebZone, Lynch also said during a Thursday appearance on San Francisco radio station KNBR that Peters merely “made a decision that he’s really happy here.” 

Last February, Andrew Marchand of the New York Post linked Lynch with broadcast openings had by Fox Sports and Amazon Prime Video at that time. Lynch later explained why he stayed put:
