49ers GM: Jimmy Garoppolo trade talks came to ‘screeching halt’ after surgery

The San Francisco 49ers weren’t far from putting the finishing touches on a trade involving Jimmy Garoppolo before the quarterback’s shoulder surgery derailed negotiations, according to general manager John Lynch.

“I felt we were close in some discussions and then the decision was made to have surgery and it brought things to a screeching halt,” Lynch said Monday on KNBR, via Jake Hutchinson. “We either want to have Jimmy playing for us, which we’re alright with, or we want him to get the value.”

Garoppolo, 30, started 15 games for the 49ers in 2021 and led the team to a 9-6 record in those starts. He finished the regular season with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, and led the team to the NFC Championship where it lost to the Los Angeles Rams, 20-17.

The 49ers plan to turn to 2021 third overall pick Trey Lance at quarterback for the 2022 season, making Garoppolo and his $26.95 million salary cap hit expendable.

In March, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reported that the Indianapolis Colts were the only team interested in trading for Garoppolo. Days later, the Colts acquired Matt Ryan in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons.

Lance, 21, started two games for the 49ers in 2021 and threw five touchdowns with two interceptions.
