49ers defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw has season-ending knee surgery

San Francisco 49ers star defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw has been slowed by a right knee problem throughout the regular season, and it’s now known the second-year pro won’t play another snap until the summer of 2022 at the earliest.

According to Nick Wagoner of ESPN, Kinlaw underwent season-ending knee surgery earlier this week.

“There’s a lot of things that went into it that they found and things like that,” 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters Friday. “I think the good news is they feel like they solved the problem. Obviously, it hurts he’s not going to be with us this year. … [The doctor] feels that he found the issue and thinks that will be good news for us next year.”

Kinlaw tallied eight total tackles and one quarterback hit this season. The 24-year-old was named to the Pro Football Writers of America All-Rookie Team for his play during the 2020 campaign.

Also on Friday, Shanahan confirmed that rookie quarterback Trey Lance will be back on the active roster as the backup for veteran Jimmy Garoppolo after Lance missed last Sunday’s loss to the Indianapolis Colts because he wasn’t yet fully recovered from a knee sprain
