Most common lenses used in smartphones are wide-lens, ultra-wide lens, macro lens and telephoto lens. Wide-angle lens
This is one of the most commonly used smartphone lenses. This is the primary lens in the smartphone launched in the past few years. In simple terms, this is the lens that your smartphone’s camera uses when you switch on the camera app. The lens is ideal for day-to-day photography and is also commonly used in the front camera on the phone. If you wish to use a wide-angle lens on your smartphone, you just have to access the basic Photo option in your smartphone camera.
Ultra-wide-angle lens
An Ultra-wide-angle lens can also be found in most of the smartphones. The lens provides your smartphone a wide field of vision. It is backed by an ultra-wide angle sensor. An ultra-wide angle lens gets 117-123 degrees field of view. For context, a primary lens or wide-angle lens gets 79-80 degrees field of view. You can access ultra-wide-angle in your smartphone by zooming out on your smartphone camera. Once you do that, your camera shifts from wide-angle lens to ultra-wide-angle lens. Few phones also tell you when you are using ultra-wide angle lens. These lenses are also used in the front side of the camera.
Telephoto lens
A telephoto lens allows you to capture images of subjects far away. These lenses help you to get an illusion of depth in your photo. Telephoto lens is not as common as the ultra-wide lens and it is found in premium smartphones. The lens is paired with a telephoto sensor for the best image output. Using a telephoto lens is quite simple. Just like you zoom out to use an ultra-wide lens, you have to zoom in to use a telephoto lens. Your smartphone will automatically move from using a wide-angle lens to an ultra-wide lens when you zoom in beyond the primary lens’s ability.
Macro lens
Macro lenses are slowly gaining popularity among smartphone users. This lens allows you to capture close details of the subject. It can be considered as a magnifying glass on your smartphone as it allows you to to focus on a subject that is as close as 2 cm. Most smartphones that feature a Macro lens offer a dedicated option in the camera menu through which you can access the lens. This lens can be found both in budget as well as premium smartphones. A Macro lens cannot be accessed using the zoom just like other lenses mentioned above.
