They conceded runs at 4.25 an over, and let India score at least 100 over what was par. And when i9n the night it didn’t turn that much, Sri Lanka came up against two world-class fast bowlers. Now at 86 for 6, they will be facing the spinners in the afternoon. They could end up giving up a match-deciding lead. Shreyas Iyer shone with the bat. Yes the bowling was not great but he was superb with his intent. As were Vihari, Kohli and Pant, but Iyer went on to score 92. Bumrah and Shami took five wickets between them.

“When I was waiting to bat, I could see there was drama happening every over,” Shreyas Iyer says. “I just decided I couldn’t get out defending the ball because there was more chance getting out that way. So we had to have that intent. I didn’t think of the 100 until I reached the 80s. Jassi was defending so well I never felt I can take a single only the fifth or the sixth. I don’t have any regrets, I could have got out before as well. When the ball was new, it seamed and swung for us.”
