28 Rajya Sabha MPs take oath, One for second time

The first day of the monsoon session saw 28 new Rajya Sabha members, including former union ministers P Chidambaram, Kapil Sibal, Praful Patel and Rajeev Shukla as well as celebrities such as cricketer Harbhajan Singh and film director V Vijayendra Prasad take oath. They also cast their vote in the presidential poll a few minutes later.

Actor-politician Jaggesh, a newly-elected BJP member from Karnataka, had to take oath for a second time on Monday. He had taken oath in the Rajya Sabha chairman M Venkaiah Naidu’s chamber on July 8 in the name of Swami Raghavendra Swami. This oath was declared invalid by the Rajya Sabha Secretariat as it was not as per the prescribed format, which states that oath can only be taken in the name of ‘God’ or the member has to take an oath of affirmation (‘solemnly affirm’).

Naidu mentioned the case in the House on Monday and directed members not to deviate from the format. However, he didn’t mention the name of the member.

Among the 28 members who took oath were four former union ministers – P Chidambaram (who took oath in Tamil), Kapil Sibal (independent from UP), Rajeev Shukla and Praful Patel (NCP). Congress leaders Randeep Surjewala, Pramod Tiwari, Ranjita Ranjan and Imran Pratapgarhi also took oath on Monday. Other prominent names included Sanjay Raut (Shiv Sena), Javed Ali Khan (SP), Misa Bharti (RJD), Khiru Mahto (JDU), Vijaysai Reddy (YSRCP) and Sasmit Patra (BJD).

Cricketer Harbhajan Singh, who was elected on an AAP ticket from Punjab, and Vijayendra Prasad, who wrote scripts of movies such as Bahubali and Bajrangi Bhaijaan, also took oath. Prasad is from the nominated category.

Though the Rajya Sabha secretary general announced the name of sprinter PT Usha and celebrated singer Ilaiyaraaja – both from the nominated category – they were not present in the House. Usha arrived in the national capital on Monday afternoon and was accorded a warm welcome by Delhi BJP leaders. She is likely to take the oath on Tuesday. These members later took part in the polling for the presidential elections.
