22 Fabulous Moments From Venice Film Festivals Past
First held in 1932 as the Esposizione d’Arte Cinematografica—then just a section of the Biennale—the Venice Film Festival is not only the oldest festival of its kind in the world, but also the most glamorous (with the possible exception of Cannes). Opening with Noah Baumbach’s adaptation of White Noise, the 79th edition will see the great and the Gucci-clad of Hollywood descend on the Lido again for 10 days of red-carpet events. Among the films in competition for the Golden Lion this year: Don’t Worry Darling, Olivia Wilde’s dystopian thriller starring Florence Pugh and Harry Styles; Blonde, Ana de Armas’s controversial Marilyn Monroe biopic; and Bones and All, which reunites Luca Guadagnino and Timothée Chalamet for the first time since 2017’s Call Me By Your Name.
As ever with Venice, what happens outside of the screenings will be as captivating as the films themselves. With both Chalamet and Styles in attendance, we’re all but guaranteed some boundary-pushing menswear styling, while the presence of Cate Blanchett in support of her forthcoming film Tár promises frothy Armani gowns and dramatic McQueen looks.
Ahead of opening night on August 31, revisit the most glamorous images of the festival through the years, below.
