1st Test, Christchurch, Feb 17 – 21 2022, South Africa tour of New Zealand (Neil Wagner 2*, Henry Nicholls 37*, Duanne Olivier 2/36) – Stumps, SA vs NZ, 1st Test, day 2, live score, 2022

The wicket has help for the seamers and South Africa need to strike quickly and regularly on day 2 to prevent the hosts from running away with the game. We will be there at 10.30am to bring it all to you. Do catch up on the report and the reaction from both camps after an action-packed day 1. Till tomorrow, on behalf of Karthik and Thilak our scorer, signing off. Ta, ta!

Alex L: “Taking a first innings lead on the first day of a test match surely is a fairly rare occurrence. Great work Blackcaps!”

Ahmad Khawaja : “Good to see a full quota of overs in on the first day. 88 overs plus 2 for change of innings so 90 on the dot! “

6.30pm: New Zealand’s day. And by a long way. They are into the lead at the end of day 1. How often do you see that in a Test match? It was all set up by Matt Henry who was outstanding on his home ground, kept hitting the right areas and got the edges which were held. Green conditions and he used it to the maximum effect. He set the tone with the wicket of Elgar in his opening over and never looked back. New Zealand’s catching complemented his superb swing and seam bowling. South Africa just couldn’t handle the heat and were bowled out for their lowest score ever against New Zealand in Tests with Henry taking 7/23. In reply, South Africa hit the right areas but their fielding has been shocking. Four catches have gone down – Latham once, Nicholls twice and Wagner in the last over before stumps. Despite the unusually bad fielding, they managed to take 3 wickets with Olivier the pick of the bowlers. Rabada looked threatening from the round the wicket angle too. Jansen and Stuurman both brought their respective strengths into play but Nicholls was positive from the start and has capitalised on his two chances to justify his promotion up the order to 4.
