1st ODI: David Warner in race against time to get fit | Cricket News – Times of India

MUMBAI: If India have lost out on Shreyas Iyer due to a back injury, Australia too have an injury concern ahead of the three-match ODI series, which will kick off at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday.
TOI has learnt that star opener David Warner will only play in the opening ODI if he is able to “bat comfortably in the nets” on Wednesday evening at the nets. The veteran opener needs to prove his fitness following his recovery from a fractured elbow.
The 36-year-old explosive left-hander was ruled out halfway through the second Test in Delhi with concussion and a hairline fracture on his elbow during the just-completed series, which India won 2-1. He was subsequently forced to go back to Australia.
Hugely popular in India, Warner was spotted playing street cricket with a bunch of kids in the city. “Found a quiet street to have a hit,” Warner captioned his post on Instagram, while putting out a video of him playing cricket on a Mumbai street.

He had earlier put a selfie of himself sitting in a car with a kaali-peeli taxi driver, giving him a ‘thumbs up’ and captioning it “out and about” in the city.

The next two matches of the ODI series will be played in Vizag on Sunday and Chennai on March 22.
Australian coach Andrew McDonald was optimistic about the batter’s fitness for the ODIs a few days back.
While Warner had endured a poor run in Test cricket recently, he has a terrific record in ODIs-6007 runs in 141 [email protected], with 19 hundreds and 27 fifties. The last time Australia played India at the Wankhede Stadium in an ODI on January 14, 2020, the veteran batsman had scored an unbeaten 128, adding 258* with fellow opener Aaron Finch to help the visitors score a crushing 10-wicket win.
