An 18-year-old Texas A&M-Texarkana (TAMUT) baseball player is recovering in hospital after being shot during a game in Texarkana, TX. Saturday afternoon after a stray bullet traveled 400 yards amid a confrontation in the neighboring area.
Texarkana Texas Police Department announced Sunday shots were fired in a neighborhood west of George Dobson Field at Spring Lake Park with an errant round ‘travelled about 400 yards and struck the innocent victim at the ball field.’
One of the men ‘directly involved’ in the shooting – Demarco Banks, aged 20 – turned himself in overnight. He has since been booked into the BiState Justice Center and charged with deadly conduct.
Police are hunting a second man who they believe was the other shooter, 17-year-old Kamauri Butler. There is a felony warranted out for Butler relating to aggravated assault.
According to the Texarkana Gazette, the Texas A&M University-Texarkana player was hit in the chest while in the bullpen as the game vs. University of Houston-Victoria was occurring.

The victim was in a stable condition as of Monday morning, per a police statement. The teen reportedly had emergency surgery after the incident.
Department spokesman Shawn Vaughn told the Gazette it was a case of ‘incredibly bad luck, bad place.’
TAMUT released statements this week confirming the incident, subsequent hospital treatment, the ruling of the game as a no contest, alongside the cancelation of a softball doubleheader Sunday.
‘The university’s counseling services are available to players and other students,’ the statement read. ‘At this time we ask that you keep our student-athlete, his family, teammates and friends in your prayers.’
Police also made three arrests of men who were at the scene of the shooting Saturday.
Yankeengea Smith, 49, was taken into custody for unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and two counts of possession of methamphetamine and ecstasy pills.
19-year-olds Nathan Moore and Marcell Beaver were arrested for tampering with evidence and possession of marijuana, and possession of marijuana, respectively.
