We’ve seen sustainability become a growing trend on the red carpet in recent years — and this year’s Met Gala was no different. Considering the theme was In America: A Lexicon Of Fashion, it’s fitting that it was US designers who were leading the way on this front, with Emily Bode making a rare venture into evening wear by creating a custom embroidered two-piece for Lorde that celebrated the Arts and Crafts movement, featuring antique embellishments dating from 1890 onwards.
That look was actually the first of two eco-conscious looks for Lorde, who later switched into a printed gown by Collina Strada (the New York-based brand, which uses deadstock and other sustainably-sourced materials, features in her Solar Power video and was also behind Kim Petras’s head-turning horse-girl look) at Kacey Musgraves’s Met Gala after-party at The Standard.

Gabriela Hearst completed the trio of American designers flying the flag for sustainable fashion, dressing Gillian Anderson in Chloé and Maria Sharapova in her namesake label, while Stella McCartney was behind Julia Garner’s shimmering look, as well as Ella Emhoff’s Adidas x Stella McCartney bodysuit and trainers (the latter of which was made using recycled ocean plastic).
Dutch designer Iris Van Herpen — who‘s known for using innovative, low-impact materials in her spectacular creations — is also fast becoming a red-carpet favorite, dressing Grimes, Tessa Thompson, Gabrielle Union and Winnie Harlow on the night. Meanwhile, rising designer Conner Ives made his Met Gala debut, with Natalia Bryant wearing his sequin bubble ball gown, created using recycled plastic.
