Eight cheetahs – five female and three male – were brought in from Namibia to Kuno National Park (KNP) in MP in September 2022.
“Following the import of 12 cheetahs in February, the plan is to translocate a further 12 annually for the next eight to 10 years,” said the environment ministry on Friday. Initially, these 12 cheetahs too will be translocated to KNP. “Restoring cheetahs is a priority for the government led by PM Modi with far-reaching conservation consequences. India looks forward to welcoming the cheetahs from South Africa,” said environment minister Bhupender Yadav while tweeting on the latest MoU signed between India and South Africa on cooperation in reintroduction of cheetahs to India.
As per MoU, the countries will exchange best practices in large carnivore conservation through transfer of technology and to establish a bilateral custodianship arrangement for cheetahs translocated between the two nations.tnn
