Years ago, Birkenstocks were very much considered fashion outliers. But over the past few years, they’ve exploded in popularity. After some extensive googling, I can confidently say that it was 2018 when the ultimate “ugly” sandals truly became accepted in fashion circles, which meant Birkenstocks started appearing everywhere.
Of course, it’s more than that. There have been cool, high-profile collaborations with fashion brands such as Proenza Schouler and Rick Owens that have also piqued the interest of insiders and shoppers alike. And during the pandemic, these shoes have become the most sought-after in the world. Global fashion shopping platform Lyst marked them as one of the most searched-for items in 2022.
